SG Doom Lee is a London-based Korean record producer, composer, and sound artist. With a decade of contribution to the rock/metal music scene as a record producer, his artistic prowess extends beyond those realms. In his solo work, the artist delves into the realms of orchestral and experimental composition. Through creative manipulation of synthesizers, noise, and classical instruments, he constructs captivating and surreal soundscapes that push artistic boundaries. This artistic vision is vividly portrayed in his audio-visual works, where monotonous colour palettes undergo dramatic transformations into heavily-distorted hues, seamlessly morphing nostalgic picturesque scenes into psychedelic fantasies.
In 2021, SG Doom Lee unveiled his first symphonic orchestral piece Elysium (Song for Paulie)’. Opening with a melancholic cello solo, the composition unfolds, a transformative narrative takes shape, leading the listener into a joyous waltz adorned with enchanting interplay between the strings and woodwinds. The grand finale arrives as a majestic march, accompanied by a powerful choir and resounding brass, leaving a lasting impression of ascension and wonder.
His upcoming 6-track EP, titled 'Voltage Controlled Ocean,' invites listeners to embark on an immersive sonic journey through the uncharted depths of the ocean and ancient mythology. Exploring the realms of psychedelia and spirituality, this ethereal and enigmatic domain exists beyond the limits of our imagination.
Piano Suite for Spaial Arpeggio in Cm, Op. 1 (Ambisonic)
SG Doom Lee invites you to step beyond the conventional practice of 'listening to sound' and instead experience 'listening inside the sound.' In this spatial composition, the artist transforms the piano—a linear, two-dimensional instrument—into a spiralling sound architecture that expands through a vast virtual dome structure.
Metal Phase
Inspired by Steve Reich, reimagined with the sound of heavy metal.
The subtle slowing of the guitar riff creates evolving rhythmic and harmonic patterns that go out of sync yet form unique relationships across sections. Audiences are invited to experience two contrasting tracks within the same composition—switching focus between channels or embracing the tension and complexity created as the harmonic palettes converge.
lletnodksatnod (4DSOUND)
From the 4DSOUND public showcase at MONOM Studio, Berlin on 4th May 2024, exploring the most physical and immersive experience of spatial audio powered by 48.9 channels. Co-written and produced by SG Doom Lee, Michael Strebel, and Mhm Mhm. The composition begins with a deep, resonant rumble, accompanied by eerie ambient textures that create a sense of unease. A distorted horn erupts like an ancient creature awakening, followed by a pulsating bassline that ebbs and flows, leading to an explosive burst that scatters into shimmering chimes. As a celestial yet enigmatic voice emerges, entwined with an unsettling choir, the layers of sound weave a beautiful disarray, neither victorious nor despairing, while the persistent rumble lingers like an unanswered question.
SG's SOUND DIARY - HELSINKI
How do you recall the sound of your holiday?
This episode of SG’S SOUND DIARY is composed of five sequences of consecutive 3-minute-long soundscapes from various places along my journey to Helsinki in December 2023. These are not sounds from nature or wilderness; these are urban noises. Yet, this Finnish capital is unlike typical cities full of loud, abrupt noise. Everything slows down in this Nordic city during the winter of heavy snows and scarce daylight. Even the sound of waves seems calm and distant in the frozen Baltic Sea.
Coral Fortress (from EMS-LIVE)
A live rendition of "Coral Fortress" from EMS-LIVE at the George Wood Theatre on November 30, 2023. Feeding a shoegaze-inspired wall of guitar sound into granular synthesis and tape loop, all the melodies and notes – whatever there were – disperse and scatter, becoming barely perceptible. Yet, they exist to reconstruct an even greater wall of sound, functioning as essential components of harmonics and resonance. The activation of each distinct melody segment reshapes the elements of the sonic wall. Pulsating techno beats underpin this vibrant journey.
Open Sky (Official Video)
Music video work directed and edited by SG Doom Lee, for shoegaze band 4.5F's ambient number 'Open Sky' (2022), employing colour feedback and frame warping on to the filmed footage.
Oasis (Official Video)
Music video work directed and edited by SG Doom Lee, for shoegaze band 4.5F's single 'Oasis' (2023), employing AI-based geographical morphing, pixel sorting and distorted masking.
Yongwangnim Injured (Official Visual)
OCEAN IS DEEPER THAN SPACE, MORE EMOTIONAL THAN LIFE. Inspired by Korean legends, SG Doom Lee's dark, oceanic ambient track takes place in a submerged temple of the Dragon King. The artist presents the fascinating interaction between visual effects and sonic elements—particle effects, colour distortions, and wavy deformations of animations respectively correspond to granular delay, resonance distortion, and comb-filtering techniques in sound design.
High Ocean High | Ambient Modular Jam Session
SG explores probability-based sequencing to trigger dynamic chord voicing and progressive clock/tempo manipulation with modular synths. These simple 2-chord-structure pieces develop into a surrealistic metamorphosis of sound, conjuring imagery from cloudy twisters to underwater swirls, offering a journey from the highest thrill to exhilarating relaxation.
Drainage Overture
An industrial, ambient soundscape generated by a multi-platform system (combining generative music and audio-reactive visuals), with MAX/MSP and TouchDesigner communicating seamlessly. It utilizes random sample triggers and buffers, with intensity (driven by chance) controlled through MIDI controller performance.
